Sounds to me like the switch is sticking - if it was out of use for a number of years - you mentioned that the spring was missing - likely it is full of crud.
Try checking the action of the switch - with the bike on the side stand - crouch down and cycle the switch manually a few times and see if it is moving freely.
Clean up the entire switch assembly and you may find that your "warning light" problem is solved!
